Checkley-Staffs Staffordshire Moorlands

Festival Thanks
A huge thank you is extended to everyone who took part in the medieval festival & to all those who supported the various events throughout the week.

There is no doubt that the Festival was a huge success and involved so many people, it is impossible to name all those who have contributed to the success as there are so many - it was a real community effort!

The event started with a bang - the fireworks were spectacular, sponsored by Keith & Carolyn from Laser Hire Ltd at Fole.

The Flower Festival in church - Noah & the Flood - organised by Cynthia Brassington exceeded all expectations and visitors flocked to the church.

All individual groups have been able to benefit financially by the events they organised - so many were involved in the street market and events of Sat 3 September & the sun shone so brilliantly! The main impetus for fund raising was the fundraising by the church groups for the Bell Tower Restoration - funds from the event for this have now topped £9000 - which is beyond our wildest expectations - thank you all for your generosity, it is a wonderful start for our campaign!

The Grand Raffle with fantastic prizes, with tickets sold to raise money for the voluntary group of your choice raised £2293 - prize winners are listed separately!

Sunday saw more events in the village and the Tug of War and It's a Knockout at the Cricket Club.

Tuesday's highlight was the Musical & Drama evening organised by Checkley Jubilee Players and Checkley Youth Group - what a performance!

The Finale - The Banquet - with well over 200 guests was an apt end to a very successful week - Checkley is a real community & we can be proud of that - Thank you

Checkley Parish Medieval Committee

We were absolutely delighted to read the letter from Betty Cotterill of Dresden, which was printed in the Sentinel on Wednesday, September 14 2005 - thank you for this. It read:

A GREAT SHOW BY VILLAGERS.

Sir, - I am writing to congratulate the villagers of Checkley for the wonderful effort that went into their medieval celebrations. We were truly amazed. The flowers in their church telling the story of Noah's Ark were unbelievable, the stalls lining the street, and everyone dressed in medieval clothes, the parade and encampment, cream teas in a wonderful garden. It was like going back in time. Well done Checkley, we wish there were more communities like you. I hope you reach your goal, you deserve to.
