Youth Group
Meeting Minutes 22/04/2005
|
The club was formed in September 1997 with the assistance
of a grant from Checkley Parish Council. The Group has also received support
from Staffordshire County Council, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council
and SCYVS.
The club is run by a Youth Worker employed by Staffordshire County Council
and paid for by the Group. The club is managed by a committee made up
of representatives from the leaders and young people elected on an annual
basis at the Annual general Meeting. The Management Committee meets at
lest once every term.
The group meets in Checkley Community Centre on Friday evenings, during
term time between 7.15pm and 9.15pm and caters for young people aged 10
years and upwards. Weekly admission is £1.
We would consider the venture to be a success story and have a regular
attendance of between 30 and 35 young people. Weekly meetings take the
format of an open session for approx. one hour, followed by an opportunity
to join in with an organised activity e.g. First Aid, Line Dancing, Art
& Craft, Quizzes, Outdoor games, Murder Mystery, cookery In addition outings
to Waterworld, Bowling, Ice skating, skiing, tobogganing etc are arranged
three or four times per term. The club also has its own resident DJ (two
of the young people!) and hosts a disco once every term. The young people
have also staged a couple of Talent Competitions, when parents and members
of the village were invited.
Furthermore, the leaders and young people have organised a couple of "litter
picks" in the village and have undertaken some work in Checkley Church
Yard and further plans are underway to organise path clearing during the
Summer holidays. It is the intention to involve the young people in projects
that benefit the community, wherever appropriate.
